hey everybody, I've recently installed Fallout 3. Its a great game but it has a lot of problems. The first I encountered was that it would terminate (meaning alt-f4 itself) and a message saying that ATIKMDAG has stopped working but has recovered. This was tolerable at first but it got annoying as it happened even more frequently as I progressed through the game. I tried fixing it using a few methods mentioned online (like the MSCONFIG/BOOT fix) but it just made it worse. Then I decided to install the latest patch hearing that it usually solves most crash related issues. Now I cant even play the game, everytime I launch it the screen goes black and my PC freezes up and I have to reboot. The problem persists even after uninstalling/reinstalling the game. Attached is a notepad file containing my laptop specs.

btw, this problem has also occured with other games such as Gears of War for Windows, and Crysis Warhead; all of which have windows live in common. I think that might have something to do with it because none of my other games (like Unreal Tournament 3 or Dark Messiah Might and Magic) have this problem and work fine.

it might just be the game it is like they did not remove all of the bugs in it it has happend on all of the platforms fallout 3 is on.

Try running Fallout 3 in Windowed Mode.

Uninstall any ffdshow audio and/or video codecs you have installed. Update your graphics drivers. Or if they are up to date, try the earlier version.

Also disabling as many extra effects as possible helps

I've already done all of the above mentioned, including setting my 3D settings to low on evey single item. AA off, windowed, and all my drivers are updated as of yesterday. I havent tried uninstalling all my audio/video codecs, going to see if that helps any. Other suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated

Try turning everything off...all water and shadow effects.

Also for some reason the game goes longer without crashing on a normal size monitor eg 17" than on a 32"+ TV. That was my experience.

Google Fallout 3 FinalFix and download and install it, should fix most of the problems. Its a fix that someone made themselves.

For some reason, utorrent and azeurus aren't connecting and im not able to download it (found it as a torrent). If possible, can u provide a direct download link for the file? One more thing, i noticed that my problem occurs with all games that have Windows Live, u think that might have anything to do with the problem? I havent had any problems with windows live games before i installed fallout 3.
