Default I want my games to run smoothly

I've had this problem for about 2 years actually but it hasn't really bothered me because I don't really play many PC games. Until Audiosurf came along at least.

Essentially games on my computer just don't run smoothly, the best way to describe it is that they'll run normally for about 2 seconds then they'll sort of hesistate for half a second and then try a catch up to normal speed, it's really frustrating on a fast moving game like Audiosurf.

I now know it's not a graphics card problem, i had a Geforce 6200TC and then today installed a nice new 8600GT, installed the latest drivers and it makes absolutely no difference.

I try to keep my computer free of spyware and defrag regularly and I've kept the inside of the tower practically dust free. The computer is exactly 3 years old today, here are some stats:

Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.06GHz
1024GB RAM

I'll happily get some more info if you tell me how to get it

Thanks for your help

Are you getting the problem with multiplayer only or is it also happening in single player?

Have you updated your DirectX and chipset drivers?

Can you please give us the make and model of your motherboard in your next post.

Hmm well I know that my BIOS is:

IntelR - 42302e31 Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG, 06/2

And my processor is:

GenuineIntel Family 15 Model 4 3.1 GHz Stepping 1

I got that from Norton, though I'm not sure what that tells me

My DirectX 9.0c is up to date but trying to update my Intel graphics driver just tells me I don't meet the minimum requirements to run it.

The problem definately happens in single player, haven't tried multiplayer. It also happens in Portal, Worms 3D and Warcraft III (though I haven't played them in a while).

If you know how to get the make and model of my motherboard I'll look it up for you.

Drew what power supply in wattage do you have? When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer including fans?

We need mainboard information make and model not BIOS version.

Or what is the make and model of your computer?

Ok I opened it up again, it says on the motherboard that it's a Microstar MS-7046. There's a website to autoupdate all the Microstar firmware, should I try that?

Not sure of the powersupply at the mo, but it's running both the monitor and the tower. I'll look into the power supply tonight. The case says DC output 350W though.

p.s. Gave the insides a good blast with the compressed air about 2-3 weeks ago.

Download the chipset drivers for your motherboard from the link below. You need to download file no. 2.
