Default turning off i.e

hi there i was wondering, i tried to turn off i.e. using ctrl alt del, to try and save some resources while playing on line but as soon as i disabled it my desktop disappeared and i had to reboot to bring it all back again. is there a way to turn this off or would it not benefit me in any way?
am using xp with sp2

Hello Stan Laurel (How's Hardy doing? ).
What was the exact process name? I think you might be getting 'explorer.exe' mixed up with 'iexplorer.exe'
explorer.exe is a shell which we view as the desktop, start bar etc. If you closed that process, that would explain why your desktop vanished.
If you don't have Internet Explorer open, than 'iexplorer.exe' should not be in the processes list in task manager.

thanx for the reply cowburn, and do you know what i got me and ollie into another fine mess because youre right i was looking at explorer.exe.

so i'll just say thank you to you and wait for yet another poke in the eye.

but i didnt mean to do it i was just................
