Smile What should I get to make my PC better for gaming?

Current specs:

Pentium 4 1.70GHz
768mb RAM
430W Power supply
ATI Radeonx700 256MB
Windows XP Home
Verizon DSL (I hate it)

I want to get this video card. I'd get the better one if I wasn't on such a tight budget. What do you guys think I should get to make my PC run CS 1.6 around 100fps?

Thanks

Without a doubt upgrade the memory to the most you can, find that out Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com, just click on "Scan My System"
I'd recommend buying your memory however from Newegg, it's cheaper than Crucial

I'm not sure how to tell if these ram sticks will fit on my MB: Newegg.com - WINTEC AMPO 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Retail

I have 3 256mb HYNIX sticks in it right now. I'm assuming they're 240 pin. I don't know all that much about PCs, so I have lots of questions.

Should I buy that video card and the ram? You think that would help boost my performance a lot? Right now CS 1.6 runs at about 40FPS. It gets low when I'm around people and shooting and what not.

Please download and install Everest Home: |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20
Once installed, run it and click on "Motherboard" then click on "Motherboard" again after the 2nd page loads, once you've done that post what it says next to Motherboard name, after that I can aid you in finding the right memory and see if that gfx card will work with your system

How much do you want to spend at most?

MSI 845G Max (MS-6580)

I don't have much money at the moment to spend on PC parts, but I'm trying to budget myself at $450.00 (including shipping costs). So I'm trying to get a couple of parts to make my PC run CS 1.6 better.

That's a handy program, by the way

Ooooh, old board...bad news for you
You can only have PC2100 or PC2700 memory, you could get PC3200 memory but it would be a waste because it would be downclocked to PC2700 speeds
Your agp slot is only 4x as well, the gfx card you picked and the ram you picked will both not work here.
Your board has 3 memory slots and can support up to 2 GB of memory, I don't know how much each slot will support but you will note that the two numbers do not divide evenly, to make it easy I'd recommend getting three of these, for a total of 1.5GB memory: Newegg.com - CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Desktop Memory - Retail
As for the graphics card, this one looks good and will work on your system: Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H955H256-1TOAN Radeon 9550 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
You might also consider upgrading the processor, as far as I know this should work: Newegg.com - Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Northwood 2.8GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478 68.4W Single-Core Processor - OEM

If you want a 512mb video card (as opposed to the 256mb one), this one will work with your system also: Newegg.com - EVGA 512-A8-N501-LR GeForce 7300GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

So you're saying that video card is better than my current Radeon x700? I'm gonna miss my fan underneath it

Well if it works for you then wait to upgrade the video card, definetly do the ram though, 768 is good for general PC usage but not so much for gaming. If you feel confident enough, upgrade the processor, if you don't feel good about doing that then I wouldn't recommend it. It's a sensitive process, replacing a processor, and there's too much room for something to go wrong if you don't know what you're doing.
But try upgrading the memory, if you experience lagging problems then upgrade the video card to one that will work with AGP 4x, no PCI-E or AGP 8x.

Anyway, I've gotta get some sleep so best of luck with your system
If you have any further questions I can answer them in the morning or someone else here can take over

What do you suggest I get that's around the same price?
