My work is getting rid of a buch of pc's, i can take what i want except the cases, So far i have a supermicro motherboard (p4 775 socket 800mhz) ddr2 ram 512x4 and a 250 gb hdd, I will be able to get a p4 3.13 ghz processor along with power supply, heatsink, dvd drive and cables in the near future, If i puild a franken pc with a p4 3.13 ghz processor and 2 gig of ram and then buy an aftermarket geforce video card(say 8600). will that be suffecient to play source engine games( hl2, dod, cs2, tf2)? I dont plan for it to be full spec or anything but can i get by ok?

Need more info to be sure--
Motherboard model ? so we can be sure that RAM will fit/work you should be able to play a lot of games-- exactly what is tough to call. 2 gigs of RAM + 3.1 Ghz P4 is fairly respectable.

the mother board is a supermicro P4SCT+2 and I have 4 ram cards that are 512mb and fit into the motherboard but whether or not it will function is the question. The motherboard has 3 PCI X x16 ports and 1 VGA Pro port ans 2 pci ports.

If they fit the slots-- they should work.
That board has almost the same Chipset as my Asus -- yours is Intel 875 mine is 865PE--Here's the manual: Supermicro, Inc. | Support | Resources The latest BIOS update is from June of 2006 I scanned through some of the online FAQ's-- they seem to offer good tech-support. I don't think it will be a killer gaming system by todays standards... but it will do for many things-- the thing is VGA video will never approach PCI express's performannce

so what will be a good little video card to get that will be optimal for this motherboard? I new from the start it wont be a strong pc but for free(more or less) you cant beat it. I have an acer 5050 laptop with amd turion 1.8ghz x64, 1gig ram, and a ati radeon xpress 1100 integrated video card and this system wont even think about playing any source games so i can only play the older games, I can bearly run fable so anything is better than what i got now.

AGP cards are on their last legs--the interface is "over".... but there's still some decent deals
I'd get one with at least 256 MB Video ram Radeon Video Cards, Best Video Cards, 8x 256MB AGP Video Card at TigerDirect.com
