Alright stecojunkie let's recap.
Did you do it in this order:
1. Uninstall the game
2. Install the game
3. Install the patch
4. Try the game

Try doing a defrag of your hard drive, if you need help on how follow the guide here

How to Defragment your Hard Drive


try updating your sound card drivers. If you tell me what sound card you have I'll find the latest drivers for you

hi , yeh those were some of the first things i did .
Issue resolved though!
had to download patch1.3 then 1.4, at first i just did 1.4
and that 2gb of ram is amazing!
