I'm no gaming guru-- but a bit more RAM could not hurt performance...
512MB is minimal by today's standards

Agreed, but I believe he was talking about his desktop cursor, the gaming not starting properly and then returning to the desktop. It's not really a performance issue at this point, as your not actually playing the game yet. It's happened to me when starting Worms World Party and SFC3, and I found that changing lowing the res (even if raising it again after), will normally resolve the issue.
