Cool [Answered] Game Freezing

Hello. Here are my system specs:

Pentium D 3.40 GHZ
1GB Ram
130 GB HDD
256 Mb Video Card
Windows Vista Premium

It seems that whenever I try to play any game on this computer, it will end up freezing after about ten minutes. It is the type of freeze where graphics are not affected but the entire computer completely stops which suggests to me that the CPU is overheated. I find this strange considering it "should be" a pretty powerful processor. The game that seems to be freezing now is Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, which I have sucessfully played on far inferior machines. I am not sure that it is the CPU. What do you guys think? If it is, is there any program I can download to limit the cpu to use only 80% or so of resources on the game? Thanks alot for your help guys!

Hello Marekszober, welcome to PCHF.

One quick question, does it completely freeze so that you need to reboot, or freeze for a short time and then continue? Has the PC ever rebooted or shut down by itself?

No. It completely freezes. I.e Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work or anything. It is completely unresponsive. I need to reboot it after.

Your right, it is most likely due to overheating, but reducing your CPU speed isn't really the answer. Making sure you have adequate cooling in your PC is the most important.

Here is a little utility you can use to monitor your CPU temperature:
|MG| Free Download - EVEREST Free Edition 2.20

The maximum temperature of an Intel Pentium D is between 63 and 69°C.

EDIT: Marked as answered.
