i just ran CPU Burn-in. i set it and used the time waiting to find another utility to monitor my CPU temperature. i ended up downloading SpeedFan. I got SpeedFan downloaded an installed, but by the time i tried to actually open it my computer had locked up and had to be restarteed. after i got back into windows i opened up speedfan and it had my CPU temp at 70C, it has since gone down to about 50-53C.

that temperture for the CPU is getting on to high even for an athlon.
Have you cleaned and checked that your heatsink/fan combo for the CPU is working OK. You might find that all you need to do is give that a good clean and reapply some fresh thermal compound and it could solve it. Easiest way is if you have an air compressor handy get a blowing tool and stick it in there and blow the dust out, if you dont have a compressor just lying around then you can buy a can of compressed air from lots of hardware stores. If none of the above is true then take the HSF out and do it.

It does sound like a thermal shutdown.

Good luck.

Yep I'm banking on a heat issue here. pBiggi's suggestions are good ones, I'd first clean your components and then if possible, install some better cooling solutions and/or replace any fans that don't seem to be working correctly.

i did as you said. cleaned everything and got new thermal compound. my CPU, although running a bit cooler, is still up there in temp. it hasn't gone past 51C yet and usualy stays down in the high 40's, but that isn't much of a difference.
