Angry I HATE you XP *fist shake*

Okay, I'm swallowing my pride, adorning my chest with a massive "n00b" insignia and throwing this out there. How on earth am I gonna get to play my favourites?!

I've had this computer for a while now, but a long time back I had a windows 98 running box o' trash which could basically run pong but only for 3 minutes before crashing. Okay, I exaggerate, but basically it was terrible for gaming. But despite this, it didn't stop be purchasing a shed load of games which I could barely play. (That's right, I buy software, don't you moderators love me ). Trouble is though, I've now got the software back after all these years, and I have a pretty sweet rig! But the things won't install! Whenever I try to open the setup files it comes up with...

But see here's the thing. The games aren't THAT old! Well, some are, but I'm including Half life 1 and Unreal 1 onto the list. And even thought they are old, I find it really hard to believe they are beyond installing. Not that I know because as we have established, I am a n00b!

So, any help would be appreciated, because I am on the edge of my seat anticipating playing the likes of Blood, Fallout, Carmageddon, Half life, Unreal and Quake with my shiny wonderful PC.

Oh, and before anyone says it, yes I have dosbox, and no I do not have even a single clue with regards to actually operating the thing. The only thing I know how to "Mount" is of the opposite sex, and even then I sometimes fall off! (If you've tried Dosbox, you'll get that...but probably won't laugh anyway)

Cheers for any help folks!!

EDIT : Oops, didn't realise that word was considered offensive, dually removed, sorry!

Welcome to the PC Help Forum Frakken,

Quake will easily run on Windows XP - infact i've had it running on 64bit XP pro for over a year without an issue...
however, i didn't "install" it as such - i copied it from my previous windows installs...and i'm talking about quake1 - not quake3

The other games i'm not too sure about...have you made any modifications to the startup files?

Nope, literally I don't have the knowledge or the experience to edit anything. Basically my new rig is the only compy I have, so I can't copy anything from anywhere, my old compy is lOOONG gone in silicon heaven. Basically all I have now is a mass of cd's, and no luck.

The process thus far has been putting the cd's into my D: drive, closing it, and either selecting autorun, or setup. And for every single game, even half life 1, I get the message in my first post. I'm far too n00banian to figure out anything else on my own, but needless to say Starcraft, Soldier of fortune and Kingpin all work, but were bought more recently. Does the fact that these are old CD-roms factor into it? If so could I contact someone for replacements? I cry, seriously, real tears!!

And thanks for the welcome, it's good to be here!

Hi, grab your XP CD and read this: Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
