ok. that was actually one of the other possibilities I was thinking of and I will post both logs with my next post. I haven't ran any recent spybot scans so this could be it.

here are the two logs I got after going through your instructions. I was able to get both logs however when I ran hijackthis I recieved a few error messages about a few of the files and the window said I should email merijn@spywareinfo.com with some info regarding what I was doing when the error occured. I just stuck with your instructions however and completed the scan.

Did you already remove things with hjt? Ive seen people getting errors like that before but only during fixing things , not making a log only.

I would recommend to update windows and install an AV plus firewall but i dont see any malware problems sofar.

no I didn't remove anything, the errors popped up as soon as I had clicked the "do a scan and save a log file" button. so all I did was create a log and I don't know how I could have gotten errors from that. however, thats definatly a good thing that I don't have any problems but that does leave us with my original problems unsolved.

seeing as how we've slowed down with fixing the problem I thought I should share some good news. It must have been the malware checks that did it, but I am now able to install whatever I like and I was able to install my keyboard and the other games I wanted. I was also able to finally install all of the most recent updates for for my vid card and sound card. I found a problem similar to mine on another forum and they thought that it might have been the sound card since when the games go to blue screen the sound skips. I might follow their advice and remove the sound card and see if that helps. any ideas on this?

Great to hear most is working alright now.

And removing the sound card and/or trying to update drivers sounds like a good way to go atm. It is a plauseble option that the soundcard/driver is responsible for a prob like this.

Well I have some great news to share with yall. Turns out my cpu fan was to blame for all those crashes. I went out and bought a new one which is now keeping my cpu a full 10 degreez C cooler. I am now able to play games for whatever length of time I want without fear of a crash. just wanted to share the good news and say thanks for helping me with my problems.
