ok this may be the wrong place to post this and sorry if it is but i couldn't find a place it would belong.

my problem is this.

i decided to play final fantasy vii again yesterday and bought the cheapest controller i could find. it worked fine and i got 2 hours into the game before calling it a night.

today though the controller won't work with final fantasy. it works with my snes emulator fine so the fault isn't with the controller. i've tried reinstalling it with no luck.

does anybody have any idea why this might have happened?

First thing I want to do is move your question to the gaming section. It may be that one of our master gamers will have run across this one before.

In the mean time, is there anything unusual in your setup? Is the final fantasy a PC version? Do you have a playstation player installed somehow?

Any other information you can give us will be most helpful.

yes it is the pc version.

i tried reinstalling the game this morning and it didn't help.

the controller is a cheap £4.99 pc line tournament controller from pc world and when installed it's listed as a HID-compliant game controller.

as i say it worked fine the first few times i played the game.

ok i've just found out something else.

i have a really old beat up controller with a shoulder button missing and it works fine with the game. when i think about it my problem with my new controller first started when i unplugged my new one and plugged this old one in for my brother. does anybody know why? i'd really rather play the game with my new controller

OK, now we're getting somewhere, see the devil is in the details, lol.

My guess is that the game is somehow looking for the old controller, and not recognizing the generic one.

When you say that you tried reinstalling it, do you mean the game or the controller? Does the controller have a driver? If so, it may be necessary to uninstall the old controller, and the new one, and then reinstall the new controller.

Also, you may want to try uninstalling the game, and then reinstalling it, to reset it's connections.

ok so when you mentioned that the game was looking for the old controller i went into the control panel and selected my new controller as the default controller and now everything works fine.

thanks for the help. you were alot more helpful than the other forums i tried.
