Default cpu running way higher than cores

hey guys, sorry for another thread

ocing my q6600 up, its at 2790mhz now, and the cpu is running way higher than the cores, its up at 61 now (according to ai suite and speedfan), but the cores are all below 50c(according to realtemp and speedfan)

i think that the cpu reading must somehow be inaccurate cos the room is cool, the air coming out of the cooler is hardly warm, and the cooler itself doesnt feel hot at all. also, its not a massive overclock, and with it running at 2700mhz, the cpu temp was way lower, but core temps are only a bit higher now.

also, the temps usually go way up in the evening cos the heating is on and stuff so generally i dont oc in the evening cos of that, just play games, so i guess my question is, can games ever put the cpu under 100% load? im using prime95

and please tell me, fellow OCers, what are safe temps? below 65? below 60?
cheers all

Intels cant take the heat as much as AMDs can bu they are getting better. Its not a super bad thing to have them at 60 to 65 under full load (my Phenom IIx4 is around 43c under full load overclocked to 3.6 ghz..

The best sensor you can get is in your BIOS.. Under Hardware Monitor. This will tell you what the real temps are.. (but they will read on the high side) untill you boot into windows then they start to drop.

How long have you been running Prime 95?

If you are using the new version of speedfan there is a bug they are trying to fix now that are reading cores on the high side. Especally Core 1 and Temp 3

thanks for the reply
i realise 65 isnt the end of the world, but it leaves no headroom for overclocking.
my question is should i ignore it? it does seem very wrong.
prime 95 ran for an hour, turned it off so i could see idle temps.
idle temps for the cores are all 30 or under, cpu is 46, that gap is enormous, and, its only today it has happened to me (although the cpu always ran hotter, but not by much.)
there must be something wrong with the cpu thermometer, normally the cores are higher! or so ive heard. im tempted to ignore the cpu temp, after all, the cpu is just all four cores isnt it?

cheers

What type of heatsink and fan do you have on that chip?
As this can make a big difference as well.,. When I had the new version of speedfan running it told me my cpu was running at 83c lol (it would melt at that temp.) I would not say ignore it but if you get different readings fro different programs I would still only trust what t says in the BIOS...

I would try a 100mgz overclock first let it burn in for a day then go all out after that..
As for overcloking you wont see any heat build up untill you up your v-core. So if you can get 200 to 400 mgz more withuot upping the v-core you will be at the same temps!

right well the bios says that the cpu temp is 18.5C, so that seems a bit daft as well.
heatsink is zalman 9500at, ran at 100% while i used prime95.
v-core is voltage right? well i was tweaking that around a small bit a while ago (only in tiny increments), and now its on 1.3V.
its idle now (and q-speed or something fancy with the asus mobo is installed, so the multiplier drops from 9 to 6 when its idle, its a great little feature actually) and cpu is 37, and highest core is 30. at least its not the huge gap that it was, but isnt the cpu temperature usually lower?

would you be able to feel how hot the air coming from the heatsink would be if it was at 60C? it must be a bogus reading.......

i have been getting the same readings in all programs, just that the cpu temp was miles higher.

and what about games running, could the most stressful game out there ever force 100% load on the cpu?

cheers

Only game that are optimized touse 2 cores can make your CPU use 100% If not then no..No game can make a dual core use 100% of its cycles..

I would still trust you motherboard readings as that it tells the thee truth lol..

Have you got the AMD optimizer? Do you have XP or Vista.? If you have Vista dont worry about the download
If Not download it and install it.
AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - TechSpot Downloads

As for temps look at mine.. Look at temp 3...(its the bug in speedfan)

Your Cpu is Temp Number 2 (the one closest to the reading of your motherboard.) It is either temp 1 or 2. Not the core..
