Default AMD Overdrive issue

Hi, i am very new to overclocking and I am using AMD's overdrive to try to overclock my processor. I have a AMD Phenom X4 9950 2.6GHz Black Edition processor and a DFI LANPARTY UT 790FX-M2R Socket AM2+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard with 4gb RAM.

I think i managed to overclock each core to 2.9GHZok, the attached screenshot will give you the screen I've been working on, where the CPU says current speed (1300) this was reading 2900 for about a minute and now its dropped down to 1300! does this mean all of my cores are running at 1.6? As its supposed to be 2.6 as defult!

Also, should I have adjusted the voltages when I adjusted the core multipliers?

many thanks in advance for any ideas

I personally don't have a lot of Overclocking experience myself, but one piece of advice i would give is to get a CPU temp monitor if you dont have one at the moment, and keep a good eye on it while tweaking. On another note i have the same processor as you and i have mine overclocked to 2.8ghz and has been running cool and stable for the past 4 months without a hitch. Im sure i could get more out of it as Im still running around 45-50c under heavy load. my 2 cents =)

As far as what i use for temp monitor
Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Hello smokeycheech and welcome.

This is just an opinion and to be treated as such.

First off if you are going to overclock drdroopy gave you an excellent suggestion in making sure that you have a good temperature monitor on board. I prefer core temp as it's to the point and doesn't come with the configuration issues that often accompany speedfan but that's a personal preference.

Second I have several DFI boards and am very pleased with them and all the options they come with for overclockers.

I would not use the AMD tool but rather as a beginner would use the AutoBoost feature that the motherboard comes with.

As long as you take the steps to use quality parts suitable for overclocking (ie: not the cheapest memory on the market but something good like OCZ etc) I found that AutoBoost feature quite handy since it will give you several choices as to overclock targets.

I believe I used bank 2 and have been very happy with the results and own a very stable system.

You do have to be prepared for challenges because not all components give the same results so it requires patience and experimentation.

It's also a good idea to read information pertaining to overclocking applicable to your motherboard make/model.

I keep a link to DFI Club Global Support Forum for that purpose as there is an abundance of information directed specifically to OC'ing.

Most of all don't get in a rush and be too eager to see maximum gains as you are risking your hardware when you engage in overclocking.

As for your current status I'm thinking something didn't take so it reverted back to a safe zone but I've never used that AMD tool nor would I from what I can see so I can't say for sure.

Generally overclocking does require voltage adjustments but what and where varies from board to board and model to model.

Read about the DFI auto boost and consider using it as a beginner, though I warn you the dedicated OC'ers scoff at it but I simply ignore them.

This page has a link to the Auto Boost manual as well as items pertinent to your board..... DFI LANPartry:The Best OC Platform! Overclock, Motherboard, Intel, AMD

No you aren't from what I can see the items offered vary amongst the boards.

I use the DFI LP DK P45-T2RS Plus and for that one they have an Auto Profile available.

Since I am not familiar with your board you will have to do some research and the best source is other users.

I had just recalled from reading feedback that the software you were trying to use was a problem.

My suggestion is take a gander at the threads here that pertain to your board and go from there.... DFI Club Global Support Forum - Search Results

As you can see the first hit is a warning about using the AMD Over Drive tool.
