Default New to overclocking

Hello,

Im new to overclocking, so I want your opinion on what I got so far.
E6750 (2.66 stock)
P35 Neo Motherboard
PC6400 800Mhz (2GHz)

CPU set to 400 (3.2 GHz)
So I have set the ratio 1:1 (RAM at 800Mhz)
The RAM seems OK at 5-5-5-12

Is this OK? or is there a better balance?

Thanks in advance.

Scotty

What are the temperatures like?
I use Coretemp to check temperatures.

Make sure that the FSB and memory speed are unlocked from each other so that the memory speed isn't increasing with your CPU speed, you'll burn out the RAM real fast and unnecessarily limit your OC by how much punishment your RAM can take.

You should be able to hit 4Ghz with yours, I can do 3.99Ghz and I'm not fully pushing my E6550, granted I have high-flow waterloop going into a dual-pass 2x 120mm radiator cooling off the CPU and northbridge while my southbridge has a special block with a heatpipe going into a big heatsink with a fan mounted on it.

If you're looking for speed, try to drop the multiplier on your CPU by one increment, and increasing the FSB, as the higher the FSB, the faster the CPU and memory communicate. However, you'll need to heavily monitor your temperatures.

Also try and lower the CPU's voltages instead of leaving them to "Auto" I run my E6550 at 1.1v so it runs cooler then usual. My friend has his overclocked to nearly 5Ghz but he's at well over 1.5v and has an extreme-hi-flow 1/2" waterloop with 2x dual-pass 2x120mm radiators.

Temp = 35 - 40

I can't seem to unlock the CPU from the RAM. I reduced the CPU ratio to 6, and increased FSB to 500 to give 3.0GHz, but this made the RAM 1000Mhz. It always doubles the FSB. I didn't save it as I knew it wouldn't boot.

I am also unable to edit the CPU and RAM voltages (in Grey)

I am using BIOS (American Megatrends 1.1)

Have you tried updating your BIOS?

See if you can at least change the ratio to something like 2:1

You really don't want to push your RAM faster then it's specified speed of 800Mhz

Unfortunately it wont give ratios lower than 1:1.

I will do a bios update, when i get a floppy drive. I see there is a 1.6 version

There's no option to do a desktop flash? Hmm.. well, definitely update BIOS first before overclocking and google around to see if others have used the motherboard you have for overclocking

Ok, I have updated the bios.

I am able to adjust the voltages this time, still no lower ratios, but there are higher ones.

At the moment i am still on 400fsb (3.2Ghz)
Ram at 800Mhz 5-5-5-12

Thanks for the help

Good!

Set the voltage to 1.1 or 1.2

Play with the ratios and FSB, always mind the temps, if it goes past 65 load.. that's too much, the C2D don't like going near the 70s

Overclocking your system may void any guarantee on components

Saying that i OC all my systems and one thing to keep in mind is (don't overclock what you cant afford to replace) today there are many apps to help the overclocker "eg" Winfox, Easy Tune, Guru and so on but the golden rule is small increments and then benchmark and when you have your system stable benchmark over the next few days, you will find all the benchmarking tools you need at > Benchmark HQ Burn Max, CUP-Z and CPU Right Mark are good
