Question [Answered] QX6700 Overclocking

Hi all.

Ive been running this awsome processor at 3.0ghz at STOCK VOLTAGE for a while now..

If i take the mutliplier over 302, things start to turn, er, blue.

I assume this is because the processor needs a higher voltage to get stable again.

Yes, i am aware that when you up the multiplier, you also up the RAM speed...(i found this out the hard way) so my ram is stuck at 1000mhz cos of my current multiplier of 300 (the next step up from that is 1200mhz i think, with this the pc wont boot at all, even if i up the RAM voltage to 2.2volts) so i'm confident my RAM is not the cause of the instability.

Anyway, i just wanted some advice before touching anything in the BIOS to do with the CPU's voltage, as my knowledge in this area is very, very limited and i do not wish to fry my expensive chip . (if you must know, i actually brought a new CPU fan from Thermaltake called "Maxorb" and i just want to see how well that will perform along with the processor )

So whats a very safe place to start the volts from?

Thanks in advance

That's a very expensive piece of silicon-- can it be OC'ed further??-- yes-- but it would require some serious cooling -- not that that fan is not serious but here's 18 pages of Overclocking that CPU-- not my best subject-- these guys know their stuff. They used liquid cooling.

I have had the CPU overclocked for some time now, i raised the mutliplier in the BIOS, (sadly this is all i have on this Motherboard) which means i have had to underclock my ram slightly - 66mhz....and my FSB is around 1222mhz i think.

Before i overclocked any further i wanted to find out my CPU's current temp under stress.....so i looked around and found a utility from Asus called the PC Probe - basically it allows me to monitor my Motherboard and CPU tempurature, among other things..

I found that, under stress my CPU just peaks 75 degree's C, and the motherboard is between 60/70 at the same point.

Is that a bad temp?, my gut feeling says so . my cooling consists of 9 fans, that includes the GPU fan, Power Supply Unit fan and CPU fan (i brought the CPU fan about a week ago; Thermaltake Maxorb MaxOrb P/N:CL-P0369 )

5 of those fans are purely case fans, two on the bottom front, drawing air in, one on the side panel opposite the CPU fan, drawing air out, another on the top drawing air out and the usual one on the rear. i also have a fan which takes up a card slot on the case (doesn't connect to the Motherboard, only to Power Supply Unit). very similar to the fan on the 2900xt GPU.

The Report says that temp "is getting into thermal throttling territory" (where the automatic Intel heat protection starts to kick in-- preventing cooking the chip-- but also keeping speed down )
in other words-- you NEED water cooling to really OC this chip-- it just draws too much power.
