Default Faulty Hardware?

Hi all,

i have recently got a new C2D e4400

i have been overclocking it but i only want to get it to 6700 level, the problem is that first time i did it it worked fine, but i was using auto voltage adjustment, but i didnt trust it since it was setting cpu vcore to 1.41 for such a small oc

I used sisoft sandra to benchmark it before, it got to e6700 levels in everything, now without the auto-volt it only gets to e6600 levels, what voltage might have been changed to result in the loss of performance?

all i have done is change the fsb from 800 to 1066, any ideas appreciated, meanwhile i will be trying to find the problem myself

EDIT:This is really confusing me, before i set the vcore to 1.39, it did nothing, just then i tried upping the vcore again but only to 1.375, it improved them again, i dropped it to 1.35 and it slowed, at even stock voltage it is 100% stable so now im just wondering, is it possible that wether or not it works is just changing everytime i boot?

Sorry for double post, but it seems like the voltage doesnt have anything to do with it, and i have also noticed that during the one boot, at different times the scores canvary quite a bit, all i want to know, is, is this normal, is it just because im using vista, or is it a faulty component?, any help appreciated

Oy,

Well, from my own experiences at overclocking my e6300 to 3.23Ghz, I set the voltage at 1.2v and it's worked fine.

If I udnerstand correctly, the speed rating in Mhz keeps changing?
Checking your motherboard make, I notice it has an option for "Dynamic Overclocking" have you checked that it is off?

I havnt noticed such an option, and i can get my e4400 to 3.00ghz, stock volts, it stays there, but the problem i have is that the scores keep changing when i benchmark

EDIT: Problem fixed, the cpu now gets marks in line with the e6700 and q6800 at their speeds, it was the monitor, it didnt like my digital one, when i tested it 1st it was on my analouge 1. anyway, it isnt oced atm, hot northbridge, but the cpu is running fine, now all i want to know, is if i get a 40mm fan and stick it to my NB will that help to cool it, im looking at either an 800rpm one or a 14000rpm one, input appriciated, also if i was to aim for about 3.5ghz, 350mhz bus should i increase the NB Vcore, if so, what options in the bios should i change to increase the voltage?

Generally voltages shouldnt be changed unless you come upon instability issues, to hit 3.5Ghz you should only require proper cooling, however, you'll find there isn't much of aperformance incerase, if any.
Honestly, my NB runs at near 90 degrees these days, putting a fan on it is up to you and on how much noise you wish to tolerate. Just remember that if you overclock by 80%, your CPU will die 80% faster.

true, but the cpu should probably last at least 10 years on stock anyway, and i plan to have a new computer before the 6 year mark, but still, a lot of cpus last longer than 10 years, with 24/7 usage, up to 20 years, 24/7 ive read, i hardly have my pc on 5 hours a day, so i think im safe, but im not going to leave it OCed anyway, i was only OCing it to see how far i could get it, i might keep itOCed once games demand more but for now stock is more than enough so ill just keep it there. as for the fan im gonna get one, i dont like it when touching the heatsink burns, and my pc already sounds like a wind tunnel anyway, so 1 more wont hurt, and when i get my new vid card for christmas it'll heat up more so im going to go the path of a 40mm fan and some glue or tape, thanks for the input.

Here's a tip, if you have 80mm fans, replace them with some nice 120mm fans, just 1 at back, and 1 at front, and make them so the back one pulls air in, and the front one pushes air out, it'll create a nice wind tunnel inside the computer and should help with keeping it cool

(btw, glue/tape probably isn't too good of an idea, you can pickup some 3rd party aftermarket NB coolers from Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! if you want for a few $$)

i already have 3 120mm fans, and a 140mm fan on my Power Supply Unit, 2 120mms pulling in, 1 120mm blowing out, it just the one on the back is a 2000rpm fan so its a little noisy

Oh I see, yea that would indeed be rather noisy

But I'd definetly try to avoid gluing/taping a fan to the NB

Edit: Here are some NB coolers you may want to take a look at: Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
