Overclocking imac G3s?????
My science teacher at school has a bunch of imacG3s for use with labs, and they are too slow for internet and stuff and to run the lab equipment.. they are running at 500mhz with 384MiB of SDRAM. Is it possible to overclock the CPU any higher? He cant afford to buy new ones, and the school wont do it. They are also all running MAC OS-X

Not sure with Macs mate...i personally won't touch them with a 20m barge pole.
But o/c'ing isn't really the best solution Best solutionw ould be to throw them all out and buy pc's

Overclocking the iMacs is possible, but...
- It involves soldering VERY small resistors
- The iMac has a huge CRT inside with almost 13000 volts running across it, if you don't discharge the CRT properly and you havent worked with CRT's before you're likely to get a pretty bad jolt that could quite easily KILL you
If you're still interested [and crazy enough] i can provide a few links

The best thing to do would probably upgrade the ram if you can as there is an access slot at the back/bottom of the iMac (if its the same as the eMac anyway) so no need to open
Is it a must that they run OS-X? You'd probably be able to milk a little more out of them with a linux distro, even running a half decent window manager.

In that case, I assume they're just terminals? it should be possible to run linux (there are multiple PPC distros) Get your teacher to have a word with the admins, and also see if he can steal some SD RAM

Yeah, I can think of more pleasant ways to go than have an old mac put 13000V across your knuckles

well, they each run mac osx off its HDD, but all the user settings for all the users are on hte server. for example, when i login, it loads the os from the hdd, but it loads my user settings from the server. isnt 384 the highest it will go?

Well running your settings from the server is why. I've never liked doing that, it's so slow! (to me, 10 seconds is slow)
OS 9.2 is built for simmalar computers, but you can't get around on that anymore either.
You could download a version of Linux for PowerPC macs called Ubuntu. Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu. It's the best OS to come along since Windows. You do have to know how to use some command line work to get everything setup. Once it's going, it's just as easy to use for surfing the web as Windows is. The support community for Ubuntu is great as well.
Oh yeah, Ubuntu is free!

i will talk to the tech suppport guy at school to see about using linux. it sounds like it will work better than OSX. I would still prefer to be able to use a PC, but schools always use MAcs for some dumb reason

I second that, xubuntu might be better suited to the G3's though or dare i say it maybe even gentoo.
Problem is with ubuntu is they're stopping support for PPC after fiesty
