Thumbs down Overclocking?

about 2 years ago i upgraded my pc from 128mb ram to 512mb ram, and abut 2 weeks later my pc started restarting randomly, i thought was the ram so i changed back but nothing happened, so 2 years on restarts gradually getting worse, im getting more ****** off.
Then recently i start getting problems like i can read and play off cd's but im unabled to install anything.
Someone told me this could be overclocking or the fact that when i got the ram i got from same place so i assumed was same because i don't know much about pc's but they are actually different and according to cpu-z they are running different frequency's.
I was wondering what the problem is and if it's actually overclocking and if their is a way to stop the restarts or to let me install cd's again as its gone on long enough and i still cant afford a new pc (poor me)

i run a pentium 3, 933mhz, with 512mb ram, if you need more info leave a post and il ltry to get back to you

Respect for putting up with an irritating issue for so long! I'd have thrown the PC out the window along with the desk, a long long long time ago.

Have you overclocked your computer? The only way a computer can be overclocked is by you doing it.

The memory wouldn't be the problem - SDRAM could talk to each other, if they were different speeds, they would both just run at the slower speed (as does the memory in todays computers). You also said that you took the new memory out and it didn't change the situation, and the problems started occuring after 2 weeks.

Now, what operating system are you running? This is most likely going to be a software issue, that may require a reinstallation of Windows (most drastic solution but still possible and not as scarey as it sounds).

dude... with that much RAM -- you could upgrade to XP for about $100.00 US-- and solve half your problems for now... it would never be a speed-demon but it would run XP just fine. Then when you are gaming... you can set up a "hardware profile" that shuts down almost everythig except your Video adapter and basic functions of your OS-- with one or two clicks. Then when you're done you switch back the same way.

Dump that Windows ME --it's the worst. If you want to do an "upgrade version" of XP ... MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL "ME" CD-ROM. YOU WILL NEED IT FOR INSTALLATION (FOREVER)

p p3 933mhz is old, yes, but it's still a solid pc...it's because of ME that it sucks as bad as it does.

i agree with ih8bills, save up for a copy of windows xp and blow ME out of the water...

i've had a couple of success stories with upgrading to XP from ME...but also some disaster stories...i suggest a clean install using NTFS partition, not FAT32

The clean install is definitely the way to go... you can do it form an "upgrade" version as long as you have the Original ME disc (why I emphasized saving it-- forever) When setup runs it will ask you to put the ME disc in your CD-drive briefly (DURING the XP installation) in order to verify you are "eligible" for the "upgrade".

I also second the NTFS file-format.

Above all save that ME -disc... if you EVER need to reinstall XP later on... you MUST HAVE THE ME INSTALL-DISC FOR IT TO WORK . STORE THEM BOTH IN THE SAME PLACE !!!
