Default disk boot failure

I bought a pc from a guy down the street and he said he cleared everything off. I turn it on and it says disk boot failure, insert system disk and hit enter. I have tried a windows 98 disk and a window xp home edition and it comes back with the same message. What now?

Welcome.............

Take the PC back to "the guy down the street" and get your money back or get him to make it work.

Sorry sounds stolen!

I must agree with elpmek here.

That sounds a bit off.

i had a similar problem to this once, i formated the disk as NTFS with the windows xp install disk ( full format, not quick ) and it sorted it out.
you've probably tried it but if not it might help

I have also faced this problem few days back. somebody suggested me to set boot order in every conceivable way. I did and solved my problem.

Thanks

If he had cleared the pc the disk boot error is what I would expect as there is nothing on the disk. Set the pc to boot from cd then boot up with the win98 or xp disk and install as normal creating a new partitions if required(windows will do this to its default)
