Default Intel Mouse W/ Lunix

hi i am just starting to use lunix ubuntu. i have a microsoft mouse with a scroll ball and side buttons. ubuntu can see the ball but not the side buttons. on windows xp the side buttons make you go forward or backwards on the internet and thats what i would like them to keep doin. any one know how to make that happen

This is most likely a driver issue. If the Lunix ubuntu doesn't have an appropriate driver, it is unlikely that Microsoft will have one for ubuntu. Since the side buttons are not a standard feature, I doubt you will find a third party driver that includes this function.

well i found this website it shows how to fix it but i didn't have the file they were talking about. this is the page
7 Button Mouse
this is the info on it

First step, modify the mouse section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "IntelliMouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Buttons" "7"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
EndSection

Now I'm gonna tell you how to get to that, given that trying to access that file normally won't let you edit it.

Go to Accessories -> Terminal (I think that's the correct path). In the black box that pops up, type:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/XF86Config

Enter your password for your user account.

The file will open in Gedit.
