Default [Fixed] Missing dependencies and conflicts

I`m having problems doing, pretty much anything in linux.
I installed FC5 and so far i haven't got it to do anything i wanted. I tried to install java development tools and was told that there were conflicts and it couldnt be done. I tried to install vlc so i could listen to music while i work and it told me there were a lot of missing files (mostly starting with lib). I tried other music players and none of them will install, each giving different errors about missing dependencies and/or conflicts with other files.

I don't have a clue where to start. I tried doing yum update (i dont know what this does) to see if that helped but it wont work because everything is broken :-)

I really dont want to have to re-install linux because i have a tendancy to break my whole hd when i mess about with OSs. I have a load of **** i dont wanna lose on my windows partitons.

hello mintedjo,

i don't know alot about linux myself but i have the same as you

basiclly what yum update does is that it updates all of your software also what are the error messages that you get when you try to run yum update?

give me a couple of minutes to log into linux and i will find some websites that i have in my favorites that wil maybe help you

Transaction Check Error: file /etc/named.conf from install of bind-9.3.3-0.1.rc2.fc5 conflicts with file from package caching-nameserver-7.3-5.FC5

Thats what i get when i do yum update. It stops there.
