Unhappy Boot Error - New Member

Hi guys,
Im in a spot of bother. I have a 57gb hard disk which originally was not partitioned. When Beta 2 of Vista came out I decided to partition this disk to try it out. So I devided it into 42gb/15gb using partition magic. When I was finised installing Vista I noticed that my 42gb partition, which contains all my old files, windows XP etc, appeared blank. I assumed this was a partition error on my own behalf and decided to restructure the partitions. Im not quite sure what I did at this point but it seems that I set both as logical and neither as a primary. On the next reboot the system failed to find an OS and both drives now appear to be blank!

I have tried to use FDISK but it failed to load on my PC. I have a laptop with no floppy drive but did copy FDISK etc onto a CD and from there ran from a temp drive but this still wounldnt let me see my partition setup. Any attempts to re-install an OS on the 15gb partition have failed saying that it cannot setup the correct volume (this was for attempted installs of win2000 and Vista). I'm not too sure if using DISKPART in the win2000 recovery console will make much of a difference.

I'm completely lost at this point!!!!
Any ideas??????????????????

Hi killahara!

Welcome to PC Helpforum!

How have you tried to load FDISK?
Are you able to connect the harddisk to another computer?
What kind of harddisk do you have? There might be software available from the manufacturer, that will help you reformat your drive.

Blue

Hi Blue,

FDISK wont load. Throws back an error saying that it cannot find the program even though the EXE etc is visable.

The hard disk is within a laptop and I dont have any backup disks from Manufacturer (DELL)

You can perhaps find out in th e BIOS what brand the harddisk is, and then search for tools.

I've downloaded the tools and created a CD. I'll test later when I get home from work. Thanks.

I think I managed to cut my loses and let it go. None of the recover CD's were able to make a difference. I think I may have damaged key volume settings so I think I might just re-format the entire drive and let it go :-(
