Question [Resolved] Windows 3.1

Hello everyone, a friend of mine has just phoned me to ask about installing Windows 3.1 on a machine. He works as an engineer and on one of the jobs he is working on there is a sweage treatment system controlled by a number of PCs using Windows 3.1, they need to add another PC to the system with Windows 3.1 on it and he was asking if i knew how. To be honest i havent had much dealings with the OS but i said i would check here to see if anyone knew anything that might help.

He was wondering if it was possible to install it on a modern PC, and if not, what kind of PC? Also he was wondering where to get it from, he mentioned eBay which seems to be a popular choice, and i found a website called RecycledSoftware.com that sells it.

Is it easy to install? From CD or floppy?

Thats all the info. i have for now. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks all...

Regards,

Ronan

Hey there Ronan
Wow it feels like I have stepped into a time capsule

He was wondering if it was possible to install it on a modern PC
This should be possible, I do not see why not. The only issue he may have would be that the OS doesn't like the big sized hard drive.

Also he was wondering where to get it from, he mentioned eBay
The only place I can think of is ebay unless you have any local computer stores which may have a copy lying around that they will sell you. (or give you )

Is it easy to install? From CD or floppy?
Yes it is very easy to install, and the installation will be on floppy disks.

But if you are thinking of installing windows 3.1 you will need to have a version of DOS installed first. e.g DOS 6.2

First you install DOS from the floppy's and then you will install windows 3.1.

So you need to hunt around for both DOS and Windows disks.

Yeah its a bit of a time warp alright, it reminds me of when i used to mess round on my uncles computer about 12 years ago... Hehee...

Thanks for your help, ill pass it on to Charlie. I noticed that on the Recycled Software website they were selling a version of DOS and Windows 3.1 together, that would probably explain what you were saying about installing a version of DOS first...

Anyway thanks for your words, much appreciated... If theres anything else that anyone thinks i should know please feel free...

Great place this is!

Ro

Also (we are really talking about 3.1 here huh?? ), I think things as USB ports e.g. will not be recognized by Windows 3.1.

Hey guys,

@Blue, as the purpose of the PC is to simply add on to an existing string of PCs, I don't think that would be a problem. I would however hate to think of a really good computer used for that purpose  LOL.
