Question Conversion 2003 to 2007 Lost E-mails

A friend has just bought and installed Office Pro 2007 over a previous 2003. His e-mails have not converted to the 2007 Outlook. I am working remotely from him, no access to his computer. Of course he does not back up anything that I know of. Are the e-mails accessible to the 2007 Outlook? What would be the file name of the 2003 e-mails?

Welcome back, Captain.

I recently installed Office 2007 over my Office 2003 installation. I performed an upgrade and selected to remove replaced applications. Perhaps there was something left incomplete in his upgrade? Or perhaps he selected a non-default location for his e-mail mailbox path? My upgrade went flawlessly and I lost no e-mail. My historical mail was there when I opened Outlook 2007 the first time.

Outlook uses a .PST file for mailboxes local on the PC and for Personal Folders, or a .OST (copy of mailbox) for Server based Exchange systems. Has your friend configured Outlook to be the Default mail client?

Looking forward to your reponse.

As I said I am working remote so I don't know the answers off hand. Will respond when I do.

I just received this response from the friend. This may be the reason for the email not converting. As I use Outlook exclusively and know nothing of OE I do not know what to look for. Does OE use *.pst files, where would the old files be located? When I am able to see the computer, probably in a couple weeks maybe they can be imported into Outlook. I do not know whether he will switch to Outlook, since he now has Office Pro.

Response:

I use Outlook Express. Would my mail be in a different location?

I'm sorry, Captain. Does your remote friend use Outlook or Outlook Express? Express does handle mail differently. I am fairly certain that it isn't a .PST file, but will need to look that up. I am surprised however, Outlook installations for me have always found both my Outlook and Outlook Express mailboxes and imported/converted them to Outlook mail.

If you could clarify for me, I'll do more research. Thanks!

Just a parting shot - this URL has instructions to move OE to Outlook. Yes, it is the same URL provided in the PM. Wanted to add it publicly for others with similar issues.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...943871033.aspx

Will mark this as answered.

Best of luck, Captain. Return when you can. The talented techs and helpful members will be here waiting.
