Default protection problem in excel 2003

hi there,
first post here. we have created a spreadsheet with names across the top and dates/activities down the right hand side.
we don't want the names at the top to be changed, but the info going down the right needs to be updated on a daily basis. SO, to protect the sheet...we:
1. click on the first row that should be able to change
2. hold down "shift" and go to the bottom of the sheet to highlight everything that we don't want protected
3. protect the sheet

it works, for the most part. the sheet is protected at the top, and almost always...the cells below are unprotected (just like we planned)

however, every once in a while, we will find a single random cell (definitely in the area that was supposed to be unprotected and surrounded by unprotected cells) that will not let us update the contents because it is protected.

has anyone seen this? anyone know how to stop this from occurring? currently, we end up just unprotecting the whole sheet...inputing the data...then reprotecting the top and moving on.

thanks in advance for any help or info you can provide!
colin

Hi firefightercol - Welcome to PCHF!

The easiest way to do this is to highlight all the cells you want to be able to edit.
Right click > select Format Cells
Select the Protection tab
Remove the tick from Locked > Click OK.

Now when you protect the sheet you will only be able to edit the cells you highlighted in the step above.
