Hi,
I am having trouble uninstalling the Microsoft Personal Folders Backup tool. I had the backup tool installed and recently uninstalled and reinstalled it. However, I am trying to open a backup of my personal folders that I created but the backup tool does not appear in the File drop-down menu. Seeing as it didn't appear there I tried downloading and installing it but I am prompted to uninstall any pre-existing version of the tool on my computer. The problem here is that the tool does not show up in the add/remove programs list so I am unable to install whatever has been left on the computer from the previous uninstall. I was wondering if someone could help me uninstall the tool so I can reinstall it so that it is functional. I am guessing there there are a few components that were for some reason left on the computer but I don't know what they are or how to locate them. Any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading and running the Windows Installer Cleaup utility to remove the backup tool properly.

I downloaded the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and there was nothing that looked to be associated with the Outlook Personal Folders Backup Tool. I've posted on a couple of different forums and you're the only one who has offered any help so it seems that no one knows what I should do. I've found similar threads about the same problem with earlier versions of Outlook but they weren't much help. I was able to locate a Personal Folders Backup folder in the registry but it didn't contain anything. I could uninstall Outlook and reinstall but I'm trying to avoid that because I don't want to lose the emails I currently have in my inbox. The reason I need the backup tool is that I have a backup of emails from another computer that I'd like to import into outlook on my current computer. I've tried simply importing the backup .pst file but that doesn't seem to work. If there is any other advice you could offer that'd be great. I appreciate the advice about the Cleanup Utility.

Have a look at the link at the below from Microsoft and try the possible solutions they suggest to fix it.

You cannot install the Personal Folders Backup add-in for Outlook 2000 or for Outlook 2002

Please let us know if it still won't install.

Hello Again DIIRE,

I had come across the website you directed me to before and tried the first method. The first method didn't seem to work because when I go to Options-> Other -> Advanced Options, there is not Com Add-ins button to click on. I don't know if things were changed for Outlook 2007 or what is the case there.

For the second method, they didn't really explain in detail enough about the extraction utility. I'm sure I could easily find a utility to download but I don't know how to extract what they are talking about. This solution may very well work but I didn't know how to attempt the solution. If you could provide me a better explanation than they do I will attempt it and see how it goes.
