You need to go Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and off > Remove the tick from Use the Welcome Screen > Click Apply Options.

Just in case you don't know what the Administrator password is - Click Start > Run > type: control userpasswords2 > Click OK. Reset the Administrator password.

Click Start > Log Off - At the login screen login with Administrator and the password you just set.

If you still can't access the files then I'd say the disc is most likely stuffed and you won't be able to get your files back. The only other thing you could try is putting in another pc and seeing if you can access the files.

I'd already done this. Thats when i realised that there was no Administrator!!

Just in case you don't know what the Administrator password is - Click Start > Run > type: control userpasswords2 > Click OK. Reset the Administrator password.
Did this.

Click Start > Log Off - At the login screen login with Administrator and the password you just set.
Did this.

Tried this on 2 laptops. No go.

found this program RECOVERY TOOLBOX FOR CD FREE 1.0.2 and was able to copy the files from the dvd to hdd. so that is as step in the right direction.

I then tried to open a .doc and was told that it needed to convert and would I like to download one. well, I thought i had, but whatever. So I downloaded the converter but I don't what it's converted it to! When I open the .doc, all I see are lots of little square characters standing neatly next to each other in rows.

jpg's still not recognized as jpegs.

beginning to bang head and mutter to myself........
