well, got good news and bad news. Good news is that your machine is clean, no viruses left or malware to speak of. Bad news is that the email still isn't working. I'm going to move this to one of the tech forums, as we will most likely get fast help that way, and I'll try researching somethings myself.

For starters, what email app are you using?

thanks,

v

I'm using Outlook Express.

I've determined that my messages are getting sent to the intended recipients, however, they are not moving from the outbox to the sent box. They are still sending with the "blank" attachment as well. Could this "blank" attachment be from AVG indicating that the message has been scanned and is error free?

could be. I don't know about OE that much, but do you have the option to toggle between rich text format and html format? If so, try sending one with each and see what happens. There should also be a setting in there to ensure that the emails are saved to sent folder, or one that says 'don't save in sent folder' or something like that.

Is it the OE that came with XP?

thanks,

v

This is the OE that came with XP. The problem lies with the fact that the OS CD is nowhere to be found. All emails, incoming and outgiong, come in with a "blank attachment". And some still do not move from the outbox to the sent folder. The only possible thing I can surmise is that the virus corrupted OE. But fixing it without an XP CD is going to be the problem.

There are a few tweaks you can try --short of a reinstall of OE
see here:

An Outlook Express basic repair kit
I would try the reregister OE & Reregister Libraries commands about half way down
If they don't work I would try creating a new identity in OE.

Without that disc-- a reinstall is not possible.
You might be able to borrow a friend's copy-- use his setup & YOUR registration key.
If not there are a few good free email clients...Thunderbird or Eudora

Glad it worked out--which part of the repair did the job ? For my own curiosity ?
