Default [Fixed] Custom Dictonary in office 2003 keeps recreating

I am using office 2003, randomly it will tell me I don't have a custom dictonary and prompt me to create a new one. It keeps creating new ones custom00.dic, custom01.dic, custom02.dic, ect. I'm up to number 9 now - the old custom dictonaries are in C:\ and look fine I can't figure out why it keeps wanting to create a new dictonary or how to tell office to go back and use a new one. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi and welcome to the site.

Did you try this from Microsoft yet?
RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

1.Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

2.Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Custom Dictionaries

3.Set the value of CUSTOM.DIC to 1.

4.Exit Registry Editor.

I checked under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft but i dont have a shared tools subkey - under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools there is no proofing tools subkey - just FYI I am running Microsoft Office 2003 under Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2

Ok, let's try something else from MS - specifically for Office 2003 and Windows XP
Is the custom dictionary damaged?
When you type a space or press ENTER, the spelling checker tries to check the word. If the spelling checker does not find the word that you typed in the main dictionary, the spelling checker looks in the custom dictionary. When you check spelling and grammar, and then you click Add to add a word to the spelling dictionary, the word is added to the custom dictionary. If the custom dictionary becomes damaged for some reason, an error occurs when you start to check spelling.
To correct this problem, follow these steps: • Microsoft Windows XP
1. Quit all Office programs.

2. Click Start, and then click Search.

3. Click All Files or Folders, click More advanced options, and then click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.

4. In the All or part of a file name box, type *.dic.

5. Set the Look in box to your local hard disk (or to a different user location if you are running Word from a network server).

6. Click Search Now to search for the file. The default name for the custom dictionary is Custom.dic. The default location is in the following folder:
...\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
Note Your custom dictionary file may have a different file name and it may be located in a different folder than the default. If you are using profiles, your custom dictionary may be located in your Profiles folder.

7. For each occurrence of a custom dictionary file that appears in the Search Results dialog box, right-click the file. Click Rename. Type a new name for the old custom dictionary file (for example, OldCustom.dic), and then press ENTER.

8. Close the Search Results dialog box, restart Word as you typically do (without using the /a switch), and then try to reproduce the problem.
