Default [Resolved] I installed microsoft 97 and some odd stuff happened

the program seems to work ok.. (microsoft word and Exel) but immediatly after installing the disk, my favoriates was erased in outlook express and there is a chat room I can't get into any more. I had to download java go get into the chat room to begin with. I was going in and out just fine. Then I wanted spell check in my e-mail so I put this old copy of Microsoft office 97 on my machine (I put this computers specs in the specs forum). This is such a small worthless problem but it is driving me nutz!! I know nothing. Can you advise me?

Howdy dobi2004,

Sorry I am a little confused, to start off with you said that the progam works fine (excel, word e.t.c) and you then installed and old version of Office 97 on your machine.
  • Did you install thise version over another version of office or is this the only version you have on your machine.
  • Do you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express?
  • When you enabled spellcheck did it ask you to put your cd in the drive?
So can you confirm that the main problem you are having is with trying to get spell check to work?

Default can't get in the chat room problem

My computer is new. It had no word processing program. So I thought to get spell check in E-mail this old copy of Microsoft Office would work for that, so I installed it. The program it's self works fine. The spell check works in the Microsoft word program. I did not install OVER... this is the only soft wear of its kind on my machine.

Within minutes of installing the program I hit... Microsoft INTERNET Explorer, (my browser, Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301.1519, Cipher strength 128 bit. update version sp2.) My favorites was empty. kicking and crying here!
Out look Express is what comes up when I go to Email.
When I enable spell check in E-mail I get a window that says:

Outlook Express: Below that it says... An error occurred while the spelling was being checked.

Did you install thise version over another version of office or is this the only version you have on your machine. NO...ONLY THIS ONE OLD VERSION ON MY MACHINE.
  • Do you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express? outlook express
  • When you enabled spellcheck did it ask you to put your cd in the drive? no
So can you confirm that the main problem you are having is with trying to get spell check to work? I have two main problems. 3 even..
something caused my "favorites" on Explorer to empty! don't want that to happen again.
The spell check does not work in outlook express, but does in Microsoft word97
I can't get in a chat room that I monitor that I could get into before I installed the Microsoft office 97 soft wear.
Thats all I have found.
Thank you for your time and expertise.

Lets try to solve your spell check problem first.

I have two articles for you which you may find useful, this first one is kind of what you have done already (just take a look for reference sake) the second one is what I want you to try do:
  1. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=253351
  2. http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_010.html
Once this has been solved then we can look into your other probs.

Default Spell Check Is Working!!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

I just checked and still can't get into the chat room. here is the url if you need it.
http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/chat.php?

I used to get in there all the time... after installing the microsoft office 97, I get the square with the red X. Before a Java cup displayed with the steam rising ... then popped right in. I checked with the managers of the site, they are as stymied as I am. I can get into other chat rooms.

I have the most current Java... I think:
Java(TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition
Runtime Environment
Version 5.0

I've got the latest java. I've gone to Tools/internetoptions and tried clicking different combinations. I know nothing. I don't even know what most of the stuff you can select there means.
