I am close to trying another firewall though I still do not understand what occurred to stop it from working. I have tried the fixes on the Symantec web site to no avail (by the way, their Internet connection tool is useless). Still hoping to find a way around the "interrupted connection" error (#0x800CCC0F). I am thinking of trying the Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (received good review from PC Magazine). Any ideas on fix or on this firewall?

Here's another - more recent, more objective - review: http://www.computergripes.com/keriofirewall.html

Sounds like I need to look at other options before I jump to Kerio. What about the Sygate firewall? Are there any objective reviews on this one that you could pass along? For now, I can get at the email by temporarily disabling the Norton firewall and re-enabling it. I have to move on to another issue with a second PC -- the network interface card may be bad.

 Hi Tim,

My recommendation is you go with Zone Alarm. I have had similar issues with all three computers here, and it seems to be the most compatible and has caused no noticible problems.

Look forward to reading about your other computer.

Just curious on the Zone Alarm, is the preferred option the Zone Alarm Pro or the free version? Price is not the object, just the best version.
