Thanks for your replies.

I don't actually have the CD Dell gave me to restore the computer, the recovery disc, and I think it would be too much hassle!

I've found two tools, McAfee and Avast programmes to uninstall any traces of their AVs that might have been left.

I give up

However, I will still check this thread just to see if anybody has any more ideas. Thanks all!

Well sometimes,these things go that way. I will keep an eye on this for a week,then i'll mark it pending or resolved which ever comes first.........Vger

I actually meant that you could try a Windows System restore, not a whole new recovery install.

Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
Under Pick a Task, click Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
Follow the instructions on the wizard.

If you have a restore point that dates back to before the problems started to occur, then try restoring the computer to that point.

It's definitely an odd problem; I'm sorry I can't offer more help. Hopefully this last suggestion works for you.

Cheers. For some reason my system restore points only go back to May 2009, I was thinking about resorting back to a few years ago!

I don't believe System restore will go back that far,that's a lot of data!
