Default Printer network problem.

Hi all

I replaced the old wired router in my work place with a new wireless one yesterday.

There are two computers on the network, and one of them has a printer connected to it. Everything else worked fine after installing the new router, i.e. file transfers etc., but the computer that the printer is not connected to; cannot make any printouts, as it cannot see the oprinter on the network.

When I go to 'add printer', the printer appears in the list as \\WS1\INVOICE (which is correct), but when I try to add it, an error message appears telling me that 'the printer name has been typed incorrectly or the printer has lost it's connection to the network'.

I have tried resharing the printer from the computer which it is connected to, but the other computer still cannot connect to it, repeatedly bringing up the afore mentioned error message.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks

Hi - Welcome to PCHF - the talented team will endeavour to help.....

First is this a "Workgroup" network?

Second is the printer a USB device?

Thanks

The printer is not a USB printer, it's one of the old style ones with loads of pins in the adapter (sorry can't remember the name).

As far as I know it's a workgroup computer, as it's not connected using TCP/IP settings.

Petrolh34d,

You could replace the \\ws1 with the IP address of the computer, ie \\192.168.1.x\Invoice and attempt to connect in that manner.

On both PC's run the Network Setup Wizard (found in Control Panel) ensuring File & Printer Sharing is turned on.

...before you do that go to Control Panel - System - (tab)Computer Name
and note the workgroup name.

Thanks very much, I will try both of these.

Sorry to be a total novice, but how do I find out the IP address of the computer with the printer connected to it?

At the computer with the connected printer, go to a DOS prompt by going to Start -> Run -> type -> cmd {enter}
At the DOS prompt, type -> ipconfig /all {enter}

The IP address should be something like 192.168.1.###, followed by an entry for the subnet mask, default gateway, etc....
