Default can't connect to network

I know this will be a simple answer.

I have two machines that use wireless. I would like to use my data cable instead of the wireless but when I plug it in the computer see the connection but I'm not able to use. I've tried to disable the wireless connection but it still does not work.

What do I have to do to make it work?

Thanks,

Stephen

Hey bud, welcome to PCHF,

You need to make sure that the connection has the TCP/IP protocol installed. Open up the control panel, network connections, right click the wired connection (right click > Properties) and then look in the list if there's TCP/IP. If there's not, click the Add button, select Protocols, and find the TCP/IP one and install it. It may require a reboot afterwards.

If that doesn't work, you can try right clicking the connection and selecting Repair (or diagnose if windows vista).

If that still doesn't work, you might need to update your driver. In which case, more information about your computer is necessary.

Try disabling your Wireless connection. Plug in the ethernet cable to the ethernet port.

Restart the PC. When it restarts it should connect via ethernet.

To disable your wireless connection, click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections and right click the wireless connection and choose disable. Also disable any other connections that aren't the one you want to use.

You may also have to right click the ethernet connection in Network Connections after you've restarted and go to Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click properties. Make sure that 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically)' are selected and click OK.

If after this it still isn't working, try using another Ethernet port either on another PC or with a PCI card.
