I have a D-Link too. Opening ports is complicated. I suppose you could do it quicker and easier reading the manual. Here is what I do though...

Put the ports in Port Forwarding, Application Rules and Inbound/Outbound Filter.

Also you have to reboot the router for the changes to take affect. It might be easier just to give your console a manual IP address and set it to DMZ.

Also make sure the IP you set up for port forwarding is static and the correct one.

A note on inbound/outbound filter...all you need to enter is the port number. If you enter anything else it won't be effective. Just enter the port you want in source port and destination port boxes.

Test if the ports are open at this location:

DynDNS.com - Support -- Tools -- Open Port Tool

Enter the port number. Even though it may say REFUSED this is a good sign as it means the port is not being blocked but that there are no services/games hosted on it. If the port says OPEN then thats good too.

I run into this all the time. Did you use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall your firewall? If so that is probably where you went wrong. You will need to check with the manufacture of the security you used and use their suggested methods for removing the software (ie a supplied uninstaller when the software was installed that could be located under the start menu, or for example Norton uses Norton Removal Tool, and McAfee uses MCPR.exe, their McAfee Client Product Remover).

Go to this site. PortForward.com - The port forwarding progression. and you can read about what port forewarding actually is.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall provides a list of routers and how to actually configure the router settings for port forwarding.

The idea is fairly simple though:
1.create a name for the specific port you want to open.( this can be anything)
2. specify the port range you would like to open.
3. enter the ip of the computer you would like the changes in port usage to apply to.
(ex: 192.168.1.10X)
Most routers then have an enable check box that you will have to check and then save changes and reset your router. Check the router settings to make sure they stayed.

You can figure out what your computer's local IP address is by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig/all.
It will say preferred in front of your local IP.
