Default Setting up a wireless network....

Hi guys,

i reguard myself as fairly computer literate, but ive never had any experience with networks.

basically ive just recieved a new modem through virgin that connects to my pc's ethernet port, and i wanted to set up a wireless network to connect to my xbox 360. Obviously i want the fastest connection as possible, but i dont have a clue about how to set up a wireless network or what to buy.

any advice and reccomended buys would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

Hello Dave, let me see what we can come up with for you.

Are you on at least 10 meg broadband?I recommend the 10 meg.

Virginmedia do not block your own bought router so thats a good point.

Ok I think maybe one of these:Linksys Wireless-G DSL/Cable Router - Tesco.Direct it is XBOX compatable.Do you plan to connect the XBOx via wireless?Do you have the XBOX adaptor? You can buy higher specification ones if that is what you wish, however I usaly do not think buying a higher priced router for home useage is realy needed.

The router will come with instructions and an install disk.

Your Virginmedia modem will need unplugging from the back of the computer and then plugged into router. Then your router will be plugged into the computer origonaly were your modem was plugged into.

When you put the disk in it will prompt you on what to do in each stage.

You will be prompted to make a WEP key/password then do so but write it down so you dont forget it.

This WEP key will stop your cheeky neigbours joining your network.

You can also look at Netgear and D-Link routers. But you must look at speed and if they are XBOX compatable.

Most routers can have 4 wired computers and several wirelessly connected devices.Any other devices you want to connect via wireless would need some brand of wireless adaptor installed.

I will mark your thread as "Open" and let the others post a few routers you may like.

I think first step is to buy a router and if you get stuck on the install we can help you further.

I hope this helps?

JB.

I use a Linksys Wireless G router with my home network and Wii system. It's been in use for about 3 years, I think. I have had no issues with this router. Linksys offers a wireless setup wizard at their website, if you would want the help. Very easy configuration - with or without the wizard.
