Default Difficult Setup

I have a question about switching connections from one machine to another.
My current setup includes a WRT54G Linksys router which supplies wireless to my computer. Next to it, the router, which runs a cable into my Xbox. I have a particularly large download on my PC I would like to speed up. Is it possible for me to run the cable connection into my computer temporarily, then re-establish the cable connection to my Xbox shortly after?

So long as your ethernet port on the PC is enabled then yes, you shouldn't have a problem. The WRT54G comes with more than one wired port though...

Sorry, we had a GeekSquad member hook it up, and I worded that wrong. I meant to say "Next to my router is the modem." I have an ethernet cable from my modem to the router, which supplies wireless to my computer. Then, I have an ethernet chord from my router to my Xbox.

So your saying I can unplug the ethernet cable from my Xbox and plug it into my computer with no problems?

Yes, so long as you realize (obviously) that you will temorarily lose the Internet connection on your XBox. I would switch it off, remove the cable, then re-insert it after you have finished using it and start the XBox. The XBox is receiving its IP address from your router..the same as your PC, albeit, one is wired and one is wireless.

Alright, thanks, it's working now. I have my cable hooked into the computer. Yes, I realize the internet on the console will be lost temporarily. Now, I have wireless and cable on the computer, will the two conflict or affect each other?

Also, one more question, in the past, I've tried runnign two ethernet cables from the same router into both my Xbox and computer, it has said there was an IP conflict. What does this mean and is it possible to have cable on xbox and PC from the same router?

Consider an IP address is to a computer what your home's physical address is to the mailman. It isn't possible to have 2 houses with the same address, no more than it isn't possbile to have 2 computers with the same IP address.

It is possible to have up to 4 wired devices and several more wireless devices from one 1 router.

Somehow your computer or the Xbox has received an address that duplicates one already "live" on your network. It doesn't sound as though you have hard keyed your IP addresses in the computer or the Xbox - right? If not, from your computer, at a DOS prompt type IPCONFIG /release (yes, there is a space between ipconfig and /) and enter
Then IPCONFIG /renew (maintain that spacing) enter

Your IP conflict should be resolved.
