Default Workgroup problem

Hi all.

First of all, I just wanna say that im glad that I joined this forum. Ive found many useful things which helped me a lot. Unfortunately I registered cause I really cannot solve the easy problem.

Here's the case: I have two laptops, both of them are using windows xp professional. I want to share files between them. I created a ad-hoc network, both of them are connected to it and everythings works fine. Then I added them to workgroup named as default "workgroup". I turned off the firewalls and also all the security which I've got. So, when I go to the network places lapA read itself in the network group as well as lapB. I checked everything; everything is ok as far as i know.

so is there any other advice which can be helpful of solving this problem

thank you very much in advance

Hi rebellion87,

From your screenshots it seems you have simple file sharing enabled. To setup the networking so you can access the files on both pc's please do the following:

To simplify things well call them PC1 and PC2. On PC1 setup a new user account with the same login and password for PC2. Do the same on PC2. Make sure you give the new accounts Administrator privileges.

On both pc's Click Start > My Computer
Click Tools > Folder Options > select the View tab
Right down the bottom of the list in Advanced settings you will see Use simple sharing - Remove the tick > Click Apply > Click OK

Now you need to give the new accounts you setup on each pc access to the folders you want to share. As you want to share the entire c: drive please do the following
Go into Windows Explorer > Click My Computer > right click Local Disk C: > select Properties
Click the Sharing tab > Select Share this foler > type the share name you want to use > Click Apply
Select the Security tab > Click Add >type in the new user name you just setup > Click OK
Highlight the username and tick full control under Permissions - Allow > Click Apply
Click Advanced > highlight username > tick Replace permission entries on all child objects. Click Apply.

It will go through and change the persissions on all files and folder. Personally I don't recommend sharing the entire c: drive. It is much better to share individual folders on each pc and setup up access as per above.

It's also a good idea to assign static ip addresses to the pc's and map network drives if you will be sharing files between them frequently.

If you still can't see both pc's in Network Places make sure that your antivirus software or some other software is not blocking it. To test connectivity between the two pc's do the following:

On one of the PC's click Start > Run > type: cmd > Click OK
at the prompt type: ping 192.168.1.2 (whatever the ip address is of the other pc)
You will see 4 reply from lines if everything is working correctly. Repeat for other PC.

Please let me know if the above doesn't work or you are not sure on how to do any of the above.
