hi guys,

So after reinstalling XP on this dell PC (thread http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...esh-start.html )

i have turned it on and tried to connect to the net so i can get all the xp updates etc. my internet connection is with Virgin media so is a solid connection all the time, with my other pc i can just put the ethernet cable in and it connects straight away through a LAN connection

However when i put the cable in it does not start connecting(that little ball wobbling about in the task bar) nor does it have any connections under network connections. as its just had xp pro installed i thought it might have to be set up manually so i tried creating a new network but it says that my type of connection will automatically connect ???

Any ideas? oh dunno if this helps but under network connections i dont have anything not even a pic of a LAN if i wanted to use it?

Hello marcus could you turn off modem for 2 minutes and the computer.Restart modem then restart the computer.

ok done that, nothing in network connections still and IE page cannot be displayed oh by the way when i put the lead into my mums laptop it works fine hence how i am replying

Could you open device manager and check for any yellow symbols under network adaptors for me please.

yes ive got three under other devices

Ethernet controller
Universall serial bus (USB) controller
Universall serial bus (USB) controller

Marcus what is exact make and model of this computer?

Lets get you some driver downloads.

When reformatting a computer often new drivers for hardware need installing.

its a dell dimension not too sure of model though any ideas how i check?
