Default LAN Problem

We're a small company experiencing netwok problems, we've got four Dell computers linked via a Netgear DG834G router. Three run XP Professional, Service Pack 2, the oldest machine has NT 2000.

Recently various "connections" have been failing (two XP machine can't communicate with another XP machine & one can't "see itself" in Workgroups and sometimes the networked Printer connections are not working). The DellOld-NT2000 machine has now completely disappeared from the Network and can't either see or be seen. On the DellOld-NT2000 machine, the worgroup icon won't expand & search for computers also fails.

I created a new Workgroup on the three XP machines, using the Network Set-up wizard. They could all communicate with each other.

On the NT machine, running Control Panel / System / Network Identification/Netwok Id Wizard had the effect of altering the Workgroup to the default "WORKGROUP". Exploring the Network, the DellOld-NT2000 could now see itself in this new WORKGROUP!

But, continuing with the DellOld-NT2000, renaming the workgroup on the 2nd wizard in Control Panel / System / Network Identification and amending the Worgroup to agree with the XP machines and "exploring workgroup" no longer functioned.

I changed all XP workgroup identities to WORKGROUP to agree with the DELLOLD-NT2000 default name.
I've also tried swapping cables around (in case a faulty cable) & rebooting the router. I eventually got to the situation where the Workgroup explore was working on all three XP machines but not on the DellOld-NT2000. All 3 XP machines can communicate with each other , & two of the XP machines can communicate with the DellOld-NT2000. On the 3rdXP (Dell2400-XP), exploring Workgroups lists 4 computers but select "properties " for the DellOld-NT2000 gives an error message - Server DellOld-NT2000 not found on the Network.

If I disconnect Dell2400-XP, the workgroups on the DellOld-NT2000 is now OK, but if I reconnect, I can no longer explore Workgroups. The DellOld-NT2000 network shortcuts to the two other XP computers still function and can exhange info, but not the shortcut to the Dell2400-XP.

It appears as if there's corrupt connection between the Dell2400-XP and the DellOld-NT2000 (ether registry or a system file) I've looked at some postings on websites, might sfc /scannow help, or since only two of the four computers aren't communicating with each other, is this not worthwhile? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi there and welcome to PC Help Forum

Can you run ipconfig /all in a command window and let us see the results from all 4 PCs?

Problem solved!
I had a blues screen yesterday (vsdatant.sys ... a Zone Alarm file)

While trying ipconfig (& ping) ... I got a Zone Alarm message asking for permission (It already had permission!). Switched off Firewall on NT2000 machine & Bingo all Workgroup Views on all machines now operating normally.

Will uninstall/re-install Zone Alarm ... thanks for getting us on the right track: we needed someone to say "go back to basics" instead of looking for complicated solutions.
