Default Help with router

Before I ask my question, I would just like to point out that I know very little about computers. Although I selected 'Beginner', I am not sure what sort of standards this place has. Anyway...

I'm not sure what is not functioning correctly, but I have two computers connected via router. My dad's computer can see mine, he can ping my address and get a response, but I can't see his at all. We can both ping the default gateway and get a response, but we've tried (nearly) everything but I can't see his computer at all.

Any suggestions?

Hello Hybrid, welcome to PCHF.

Don't worry, no standards here, as long as you can read lol, but it already sounds like you have a fair amount of knowledge.

The only thing that will prevent you from pinging your dad's PC is his firewall. Try disabling the firewall and see if your able to get a response?

Hello Hybrid.

May I ask which operating system is your Dad's PC running?

Nick.

We're both on Windows XP, I'm running x64/x86 processor, something like that. And I've tried de-activating the firewall, but I will ask him about any additional anti-spyware stuff he might have installed.

Try this on your Dad's computer.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools

Open Local Security Policy

This will open a window with two frames.

In the left frame, expand the folder 'Local Policies' and select 'Security Options'

This will bring up a list in the right hand frame and near the top you will see 'Accounts: Guest Account Status'.

If this is set to disabled, right click it, click Properties and enable it.

Reboot both computers and see if the can both see eachother.

Nick.
