hi jwramc - Jelly Bean has asked me to help you with this.

First on the XP pc's go into My Computer > Tools > Folder Options

Scroll to Use simple file sharing - make sure there is no tick next to it.

For best results with file sharing - give all pc's a static ip address and also disable windows firewall while we try to get it working.

Make sure each pc uses a different username. Setup the 3 usernames for the pc's you want to allow access on the pc. If you want all pc's to be able to access each other you will to make sure that all usernames are setup on all pc's. This is more secure than allowing everyone access.

On the XP pc's go to the folder you want to share. Right click > select Properties > Select the Sharing tab. Tick Share this folder > click Apply
Select Security tab > Click Add > Type the user names you want to allow access to the folder, seperated by a semi-colon. Eg fred; tom > click OK.
Highlight the usernames you just added and select full control. Click Apply > click Advanced > tick Replace permission entries on all child objects. Click Apply > Click OK.

Test if you can access the shared folder from one of the other pc's.

All above done, now Internet access doesn't work (I put V1's IP settings back to auto to send this post).

Make sure each pc uses a different username. Setup the 3 usernames for the pc's you want to allow access on the pc. If you want all pc's to be able to access each other you will to make sure that all usernames are setup on all pc's. This is more secure than allowing everyone access.

Test if you can access the shared folder from one of the other pc's.
V1, V2 and X2 still are blocked from accessing X1's shared folders.

V1, V2 seem to have full access to X2, while X2 still has only public access to V1, V2 (which I don't think we've attempted to address above anyway).

Seems only my laptop is now open for business (minus Internet access).

If you lost internet access after you setup manual IP's then one of the settings was wrong. On the computer that is currently connecting to the internet now with automatic settings please do the following:

Click Start > Run > type: cmd.exe > Click OK
at the prompt type: ipconfig/all

Please copy and paste the results into your next post and I will give you detailed instructions for setting up the IP addresses manually.

Thanks.

FYI: I ditched the USB wireless adapter in favor of a hard wire, which I believe is why the four system now 'see' each other, even if they won't share properly.

Try - setup IP Addresses as follows.

X2 - Laptop
IP Add: 192.168.2.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Preferred DNS: 192.168.2.1

X1
IP Add: 192.168.2.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Preferred DNS: 192.168.2.1

V1
IP Add: 192.168.2.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Preferred DNS: 192.168.2.1

V2
IP Add: 192.168.2.6
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Preferred DNS: 192.168.2.1

Test internet connectivity on each after you have done this. Then make sure all PC's can ping each other. On your wireless router you may have a setting which blocks wireless clients from seeing each other, make sure this setting is not enabled. Post back after you have done this.
