To make things simpler, let me rename the systems:

V1 is the main Vista system, hardwired to the router.
V2 is the theatre system, Vista, wireless to the router.
X1 is my wife's XP office system, hardwired.
X2 is my XP laptop, wireless.

Turned off passwords on both V1 and V2. Can't find a similar setting on the XP systems.

X1 no longer requests passwords when accessing V1, and vice-versa (thanks!), but both still only see the other's public folders, no matter what I tell each system to share.

Now, both X1 and X2, and V1 all see each other (sharing only shared/public folders).
None of the three can see V2, and V2 sees none of the others. V2 password is off, sharing of everything on. V2 seems to be setup the same as V1 except that it's wireless (but so is the laptop and it's seen).

Re: Sharing. Am I asking the impossible in that I want all the systems to see and share folders within User folders, not just folder/files located in the 'shared folders' folder? Right-clicking most folders brings up a sharing option, yet it seems to mean nothing on the network. Is that for sharing folders only with other users on the same machine?

You have to set permissions on folders and files via XP and Vista? You must right click in Vista and choose run as admin.

In Vista right click on a file you wish to share/scroll to share and click open set permissions via listed items/people or add a person/account/computer.

Edit : you can also set permissions on individual files, folders, public folder via properties.

In Vista, it won't let me share my user folder as a whole. I have to go in and highlight all the folders/files in that user folder and share them that way. This is not convenient when I create a new folder or move a file into the user folder, as I then must tell it to share that one now. If I could just share the user folder, anything I drop there would be shared, no? Can it be done?

Under XP, my laptop shows me conflicting info under sharing. It says my user folder is shared axcross the network with change rights, but I can't open the folder from the Vista machine.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Error message when you try to access a Windows XP-based network computer: "You might not have permission to use this network resource"

My only firewall is the Windows firewall which it says is self-configuring. All machines are NTFS.

As expected, V2 has very different IPCONFIG data than the others.

The other 3 each have the default gateway at 192.168.2.1
V1 is 192.168.2.3
X1 is 192.168.2.4
X2 is 192.168.2.2

The three systems ping each other fine using the IP address, but names don’t seem to work (unless something more than the actual name is needed).

V2’s IPCONFIG results are-

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State: Media Disconnected

Tunnel Adapter LAC 6:
Media State: Media Disconnected

Tunnel Adapter LAC 7:
DNS Suffix: Belkin
Link IPv6: fe80::5efe:192:168:2:6%14

Tunnel Adapter LAC 9:
DNS Suffix: (blank)
IPv6: 2001:0:4137:9e50:1cf3:81e:3f57:fdf9
Link IPv6: fe80::1cf3:81e:3f57:fdf9%11

Pinging 192.168.2.6 timed out.

Again, this one Vista system is wireless using a Belkin USB-port wireless adapter. I don't have a spare cable long enough to use the internal Ethernet card at the moment.
