Default Help With Network Problem Please

I am trying to connect two PCs so as they can both be online at the same time.

The first PC connects to the net by way of wireless connection, and I have, apparently, got the right cable to connect to a second PC, and have tried to enable internet sharing. I get the message:

"an error occured while internet connection sharing was being enabled.

ICS cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network, ICS requires the host to be configured to use [IP address]. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use [same IP address]"

The first computer's Local Area Connection 5 says "Network cable unplugged", and the second PC will not connect. It's a new cable so it should be ok, and the connections seem to be sound. The Network Wizard also says a cable is unplugged for LAN 5

The device for this LAN 5 is an Intel PRO/100+ management adapter which I took aff an old PC and put in the first available space on the motherboard.

I connect to the internet via a Realtek marine hotspot booster using a nearby open network.

Hope someone can advise.

Is this of any use?

Hi and welcome to PCHF

If you are using static IP address then you need to check that both have different addresses, such as PC1: 192.168.1.2 --> PC2: 192.168.1.3 etc...

I take it you're not going to buy a wireless card for PC2? - that would be the best option...way better than using ICS.

Thanks for the reply, Hengis. I'm not planning on getting another card for 2nd PC - I got the cable to avoid that.

How would I change the IP on either pc? And should that solve the problem?

I'm still concerned that neither PC recognizes any cable or device present.

Done that.

2nd PC, on Networks, there's MSN (says 'Disconnected Modem') and Direct Connection: says Cable 'Disconnected Cable'
