Unhappy Local Area Connection: Limited or no connectivity

Hello,

I think my XP (sp 2) machine was affected by the recent Mircosoft hot fix, Zone Alarm, and Verizon FIOS issue which caused people not to be able to get on the Internet.

I have uninstalled Zone Alarm, however, my Local Area Connection Status says this connection is limited or has no connectivity. It is "Sending" but not "Receiving." I can't get on the Internet.

A Verizon tech asked me to disable the connection. When I try to do this, I receive this message:

"It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more prototocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account."

If I click on Repair local connection, Windows attempts to renew the IP address. However, the next message says "Windows could not finish reparing the problem because the following action cannont be completed:
Renewing your IP address

For assistance, contact the person who manages your network."

That person is me and I'm not doing very well.

There is the main computer and a laptop on this network. The laptop is connecting through the router. The IP address for the laptop is different than the IP address for the main computer. The Verizon tech said that the IP address for the main computer is wrong and said it could be software or hardware.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Mne_21,

Try this for me.

Go to Start > Run > Type "CMD" in the command box type "ipconfig"

Let me know what it states.

The 169.254.xxx.xxx is an automatic ip address that windows assigns when it can't find a DHCP.

Can you please do ipconfig on the computer that can connect to the internet and paste the details in your next post.

At the moment, I have the machine that is able to access the Internet connected by wire to the router. It also has a wireless card.

The IP address for the Local Area Connection is:

192.168.1.5

For the wireless, it is:

192.168.1.3

Thanks for the help.

Try this on the pc that won't connect.

In Network Connections right click Local Area Connection > Select Properties
Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Click Properties

Select Use the following IP address - enter the following
IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: Should autocomplete - otherwise it should be 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: Make this the same as the default gateway on the computer that can connect to internet when you ran ipconfig.

Select Use the following DNS server addresses - enter the following
Preferred DNS server: Same as default gateway
Alternate DNS server: Leave blank

Click OK > Click OK

Try connecting to the internet. Please post back if you still can't connect.

That helped. The connection doesn't show any problems. However, I still can't connect to the Internet.

Thanks.
