Default Having trouble veiwing photos and video from my wireless network.

I hope this is the right board for this...

I have two computers with one Vista Home notebook connecting wirelessly to an XP Media Centre Edition desktop.

Once I set up my network, I right clicked My Pictures and My Videos on the desktop computer and hit 'sharing and security...' I set them both to share, allowed the maximum allowed users under 'user limit', and allowed 'everyone' 'full control'. Under 'security', again, everyone is allowed 'full control'.

Now when I try to access the Picture and Video folders from my notebook, I can see the folders inside but I'm unable to open them. I get the error message: 'Windows cannot access \\OFFICECOMPUTER\Office Pics\*Folder Name* Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.'

Ok, fine, so I click 'Diagnose'

'You do not have permission to access the file \\OFFICECOMPUTER\Office Pics\*Folder Name* Ask the server administrator to give you permission to access the file \\OFFICECOMPUTER\Office Pics\*Folder Name*'

For what it's worth, I can print to the OFFICECOMPUTER printer just fine.

I did this all on my own without looking up how to share files first, so there's a strong possibility I did something wrong.

Hey Overcast,

It really depends on the version of XP your running.

You'll need to give the "Everybody" group access to the actual foders if running XP Pro. You can do this by right clicking on your profile folder and going to Properties followed by Security.

If your running XP home, then you need to make sure that your profile has not been made private from within User Accounts in Control Panel.

It's actually called Windows XP Media Centre Edition. Probably the January 2002 version. I tried the first thing you said, and when I went to security I couldn't find the option called 'everybody' for that folder. I tried to add and saw that the only location available seems to be OFFICECOMPUTER for some reason.

Anyway, I set it to share and still was denied access from the notebook, I tried the second option you listed and could not find where to check if the account was private.

It doesn't end at just sharing the folder unfortunately Overcast, you must also give access to the actual files and folders as well as the actual share itself. When accessing files remotely, Windows will take into account the most restrictive setting possible between the two security settings.

Is there any chance you could post a screenshot of the screen you mentioned "only location available seems to be OFFICECOMPUTER", not sure what your looking at there :/

Here's a screen:

Not sure that it means anything, though.

I can't seem to find security options for individual files, either.

Oh I see, your almost there.

- Click on Advanced, followed by Find Now. You will see "Everyone" listed there.
- Press [OK] twice.
- Click on "Everyone", and then flick on the Allow > Full Control check box and this should resolve your problems.
