Question Trying to set up LAN network for gaming

Hi guys,

I'm having infinite problems trying to set up a LAN with my mates to play a few games (doesn't need internet access).

The laptops are either XP or Vista. At the moment I'm trying to connect 2 XP laptops through a netgear fast ethernet switch (went for a switch as internet not needed and was told its more efficient at handling data....)

Both are plugged in to the switch
both are on the same workgroup
neither has windows firewall on

One is set up in the following way:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
Preferred DNS server: 192.168.1.1

The other is set up in this way:
IP address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
Preferred DNS server: 192.168.1.1

Ping requests between the two laptops time out

Am I making a glaring mistake somewhere?

New to networking, been following various tutorials but still no luck

I appreciate any help
Kind regards

PC Guard on one of the laptops, but firewall disabled when trying to do this

If it's like mine you'll need to set the ethernet port as trusted.
By disabled to you mean you physically shut the program down or just disabled it under the windows network dialog?

ive got to the point now where my alienware can see my dell when i go to "view workgroup computers", but my dell gives this message: workgroup is not accessible. you might not have permission to access this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable"

any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hey,

ur 'dns n default gateway' and the IP addresses are on different subnet masks. deres no need 2 giv dns and gateway addresses as ur jus usin a basic lan...
just use dese series...much easier 2 handle...
10.10.10.xx for ur IP address..
subnet 255.255.255.0
The ranges s 192.168.xx.xx are generally used(not strictly so) for direct computer-computer transfers..

u can use rite 4m 10.10.10.1 til 10.10.10.255...dat shud b enuf for ur gaming requirements...windows firewall wil not block pinging requests...zonealarm n most firewalls wil mostly (am most familiar with comodo, pc tools firewall n zonealarm so i can vouch 4 them) will definitely ask u to allow or block the ping request...unless it has already been blocked 4m before which seems unlinkely...

hope dis is useful...
