Default [Answered] USB Printer - Network?

Hi all,
Anyone know if using a USB printer, plugged into a Routers' USB port would enable the use of the printer over the network?

I currently have my printer plugged via USB into my main PC but I'd rather not have to leave this system permanently turned on so that the printer remains available for the other system on my network.

Is the above possible or do I need either a printer server or a printer with a LAN port?

TIA for any help.

Use a wireless printer. These printers use a built-in wireless card and plug into a power source, not your network or computer. After you turn on the printer, you need to refer to the information that came with the printer to set up a wireless connection to each computer on a home network. Security options for wireless printing are determined by each printer manufacturer.
Connect a printer directly to the network. To do this, you need to plug in the printer to your network hub or router. How to install these printers depends on whether the printer and your network device use an Ethernet, universal serial bus (USB), or another type of connection. You also need to refer to any installation information or tools provided by the printer manufacturer.
Connect more than one printer directly to the network. To do this, your hub or router must be able to support more than one printer connection.

It would depend on your pinter make and model and wireless router.

There are such things as printer servers.

It can be done but depends on your make and models of your hardware, compatability etc.

It's not a wireless printer, I stated that.

It's already connected to the network, I stated that.

I am aware there are 'such thing as print servers', as I stated in my question.

I was asking if a USB printer can be directly plugged into a USB port on a wireless router and used as a wireless printer over a network - In general.

ie: USB Printer --> USB cable --> Router USB Port --> Wireless Signal --> Wireless Device ? Possible or not ?

To answer your question simply - no it cannot be done. You will need a usb to ethernet print server as your wireless router does not have print server capabilities.

The only router I know of that has a usb print server port built in is the ASUS WL-600G, there's most likely others but a USB to Ethernet print server is much cheaper. Post back if you need more info.

That is what I though - and feared - thank you DIIRE.

However, ! have just found a fairly inexpensive print server so all is well.

Thanks again
