Default Which Network Cables?

Hi there,

I'm currently on a wireless set up with 2 other members of my family and I hate it (speed fluctuates all over the place) so I plan to go back to a wired connection. I have a Linksys router with 4 CAT 5 connections. The router is currently used to run wireless. All I'm after is this; could I hook a CAT 5 cable up to the router and run it into my PC and receive the internet without interfering with the two wireless connections? Sounds disjointed I know but I can't seem to explain it any other way.

My last question is thus:

To do this I would need a CAT 5 UTP or an RJ45 to RJ45 UTP? I'd need one that's about 25 metres. Would this effect my speed?

Here are some examples of the cables I'm talking about -
Maplin > CAT 5e UTP Patch Cables
25M RJ45 to RJ45 UTP CAT 5e stranded on eBay, also, Network Cables RJ45, Cables Connectors, Computing (end time 07-May-08 22:20:00 BST)

I've been searching around the routers manual for a while now and couldn't find a clear answer to this question.

Have I got my thinking right in this one?

Thanks all

Hi "could I hook a CAT 5 cable up to the router and run it into my PC and receive the internet without interfering with the two wireless connections?" yes you could do that with no problem and the 25 meter cat5e cable would be fine

Some other thoughts:

Most wireless routers have multiple ports to hard wire a few locations. The router does not differenciate between the two and usually their are no settings you need to establish. You should of course lock down you router when wireless and also make it transparent to other users outside the network.

In regards to the cable lenght: You can actually go up to about 350 feet with Cat 5e for data transmission and have no problems. I normally have not seen premade patch cables that long. But you can try these guys, Cat5e Patch Cables, Cat 5, Cat 5e Patch Cords | ShowMeCables , they sell 100 footers if you needed longer in the future.

Hope this helps.
